Jazz Combo

Instructor:  Eric Patterson

Open to intermediate to advancing instrumentalists and vocalists. The Jazz Combo Lab Band is an intensive performance based class that focuses on improvising jazz in a small group setting.

Music Theory I
Wednesdays 5:00 – 5:55pm
Instructor: Walter Zooi

Open to all musicians who want to learn the foundations of music theory including scales and keys, harmony and rhythmic notation.  This class is an important component of musical study and increases skill and creative proficiency in players of all instruments and genres such as jazz, rock and classical music.

Songwriting Workshop
Wednesdays 7:00 – 7:55pm
Instructor: Thena Dare

Learn strategies for developing ideas, song form, finding harmonies and rhythms to enhance and expand a basic song concept.  Students will present their compositions in a special performance at the end of the workshop.

Fees for Private Instruction

We offer private instruction in most musical instruments, including:

Guitar (electric, acoustic and classical), Piano, Voice, Drums and Percussion, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass (electric and acoustic), Trumpet, Trombone and low brass, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Mandolin and Ukulele.

Instruction is organized into three areas of concentration, or departments: Conservatory for classical music, Jazz Studies and Rock and Contemporary music. All departments and instruments have the following rates.

Half-Hour Private Lessons
$30 per lesson, billed monthly

One-Hour Private Lessons
$56 per lesson, billed monthly

Parents, siblings or friends can study together for an additional $5 per 30 minute lesson.

SPMCC Master Teacher Program
South Pasadena Music Center & Conservatory offers the opportunity to study at an advanced and rigorous level through our master teacher program. Master teachers have achieved exemplary professional status, possess a Master’s degree or above, and have been teaching for SPMC&C four or more years. Students studying in our master teacher program receive 45-minute lessons and monthly master class performance seminars. Master track students are strongly encouraged to take Music Theory and relevant ensemble classes as well.

Master teacher rates are $55 per 45-minute lesson and are billed monthly.

Recitals
SPMCC hosts student recitals in the fall and spring. Students are recommended for these performances by their individual instructors. All non-adult students are expected to perform during the school year.  

Policies
All enrolled students are required to register for our convenient automatic billing program. Lesson fess will automatically be withdrawn from the account of your choice, checking, savings account or credit/debit card on the 25th of each month for upcoming lessons in following month.

A fee of $10 will be added for cards or accounts that are declined.

Absences/Cancellations
Students are permitted 2 cancellations per 4-month lesson period. Cancelled lessons (up to 2) can be made up by scheduling them with SPMCC staff. Make-up lessons must be scheduled within two weeks of the cancellation.

To cancel a lesson call South Pasadena Music Center at least 24 -hours in advance of the scheduled lesson or by informing the SPMCC staff, NOT the instructor.

Students will not be allowed a make-up for cancellations made the same day as their scheduled lesson.

Lateness
Students who arrive late to their lesson will be given the remainder of their allotted lesson time.

Stopping Your Lessons
If you wish to discontinue taking lessons, please inform us in writing. This can be done by sending an email to sopasmusic@sbcglobal.net, or filling out a simple form with an SPMC&C staff member. Please note that any paid lessons remaining are non refundable. Remaining paid lessons can held for a period of 6 months should you wish to resume lessons. Remaining lessons can also be transferred to family members, friends or donated to our scholarship fund.

If We Cancel a Lesson
If South Pasadena Music Center & Conservatory cancels a lesson due to teacher illness or other contingency, you will be notified in advance and not be charged for the lesson.

If a teacher is late for a lesson, you will receive your full lesson time.

Our instructors are top musicians who are active in their professional fields of endeavor. Although we make every effort to provide consistency in instruction, occasionally our instructors have engagements and may be unavailable to teach a specific lesson. In these cases we will provide a well-qualified substitute instructor from our staff.

Payment for Ensembles and Classes
Fees per class are listed with class descriptions. Fees are due in full prior to attending the first class. Fees will be pro-rated for those registering after the semester starts. Cancellation Policy for Ensembles and Classes
No refunds will be granted after the first class day. There is a $25 processing fee for cancellations or program changes later than three weeks before session start date. Full refunds will be issued for any sessions cancelled by South Pasadena Music Center.
